This was the biggest 505 Nationals in a number of years. 16 boats made it to the 505 Nationals at Aeolians Club on the Vaal Dam, in Gauteng from the 7th to 9th September 2012. 4 boats made the trip up from the Western Cape and one from the Eastern Cape, with two from KZN. The cold front hit Gauteng with avengance on Thursday bringing freezing rain, hail and record low temperatures plus plenty of wind. This was to be a Nationals to remember! Day one: - 4 races in excellent wind and chilly conditions on Friday. 1st day of racing, competition very tight. Hams had 1,1,1,3 and Funkes 2,2,2,2 Klaas and von Gruenewaldt close behind with 3,4,3,1.
Day two: - Results after day 2 (3 races today):1. Hams 10 pts,2. Funkes 10 pts,3. Klaas v Gruenewaldt 14 pts,4. Largier/ Hutton Squire 23 pts, 5. De Engle/ Holtzhausen 32 pts, 6. Hurters 36 pts, 7. Shilton/Nolan 46 pts, 8. S Ballantyne/ Ham 50 pts, 9. Parker/ Holm 55 pts, 10. Carolines 63 pts, 11. Russells 69 pts, 12. A Holm/ R Holm 79 pts, 13. G Ballentyne/Evert 92 pts, 14. G Hughes 94 pts, 15. Arthur/Crew 98 pts, 16. Lewthwaite/Tosh 126 pts.
Day three: Only 2 races were sailed on Sunday hence there was no second discard. After race 8 Hams were leading but then had a disasterous 9th race, which put them in 2nd. Funkes won race 9 and with that the Championship. See the complete results on the South African 505 website . Well done to all who sailed, this was a great event and the level of competition throughout the fleet was motivation to all to improve their game going towards 2015.

The class Exco is planning the 2013 South African Nationals in PE at ABYC, and expect the attendance numbers to be up significantly. We have also had several expressions of interest from International teams wanting to take part in our Nationals to see what the sailing is like in Port Elizabeth. Naturally the local hotshots are also returning to the fleet in their numbers and the level of local competition is expected to increase in the next few years.

Several new and second hand boats have been brought into the country recently but more is needed to support the local growth expected over the next few years.
