There are constant discussions on how to re-grow the Int. 505 class back to numbers resembled in the 1970's/80's. Well here's a few ideas.

1. Make the boats cheaper to run, so get rid of "lifting-pins", "gybing centerboards" and carbon booms/spinnaker poles.
2. Increase the membership fees to at least 100 GBP (or equivalent) and use this money to put a professional global communications strategy in place, that not only feeds the major events, but supports down on a regional and local level.
3. Introduce a global youth championship, using the model that the French have successfully developed in at least the 10 key markets.
4. Introduce prize money for the big events, worlds, europeans.
5. Reduce the overall boat weight by 20 lbs (then you can have your carbon booms/spinnaker poles back), but while almost all boats need correctors to get to the minimum weight, why are you adding carbon booms?
6. 505 association needs to be professional and recognize that some of the things that have happened in the past need closure (and people know what I am talking about).

Finally stop attacking people who are trying to progress the class through innovation and conversation, the class is so quiet on the social/sailing platforms, ideas are far and few between and in the end everyone just goes - "ah well it is what it is" - well it isn't.

Some good ideas. The only one I disagree with is the first one. I my mind, what makes the 505 so special is not all the rules that are in place but the fact that there are so FEW rules. Adding restrictions will just make us more like everyone else. I feel if we want to make changes, we need to be creative and set in motion a direction where class members get to think and innovate a solution. Ask yourself why the boats are so complicated these days? The answer is because there is NO penalty (besides adjusting it wrong:)) for putting every single system you can imagine on the boat. After doing so, we still have to add lead. It all started with eliminating the bare hull weight. I suggest that IF we want to go down this road, that we put a proper framework in place and then let sailors decide what they want vs what they can live without. Want a lifting pin? Sure but if you want to be at min weight, you will need to make choices other parts of your rigging. I believe that is working within the spirit of the Class.
